but "I love you" I meant
I'm sorry I screamed so harshly that night
I was selfish and young, and caused that fight.
When I finally gave in and traveled away
I am ultimately glad, it was a good day.
He was so lonely, so weak and sick
his body was fragile his hair still slick.
A beer in his hand, his body on the chair
the same familar smell of smoke in the air.
The chemo had failed, the money all spent
I said "bye", but "I love you" I meant.
Now your in heaven with your wife, reunited
but I wish that I'd known the day that you parted.
I'm sorry I said the words that I did
I know that it was wrong, perhaps a sin.
The talk and hatred still reappear
reminders to me that you were once here.
When I finally gave in and traveled away
I am ultimately glad, it was a good day.
The chemo had failed, the money all spent
I said "bye", but "I love you" I meant.
