Wishing Wishes
I wished for Barbie and Ken,
From their pink plastic car
To go in a box and up the stairs
To a place very far
I counted down the days
To an extraordinary one indeed
For the school bus to be at my drive
To a place education was guaranteed
The clock was ticking
As time flew right by
Pictures can’t revive the memories of
A new school, more friends, and hair-dye
I wished away a dance,
The memories are now lost
Of hair like glue, and five-inch heels
At such a heavy cost
My friends wished for a man
To guide them through their dreams
To hold a hand and wipe a tear
Only to finally realize love isn’t what it seems
I wished away the effortless years
For cars, and drugs, and sex
No more fairytales or licking lollipops
To find it’s just a mess
But somewhere in the middle
When all was washed away
I forgot what I was searching for
And wished away today
