Dark Eyes
Dark eyes
Made from coal dust
Peering back at me
Through the haze,
Through thedebris.
I see you,
One out of billions,
To be truth,
A twinkling, far-away star.
And how I wonder
How you came to be what you are.
A load of selfcontrol, I know,
I have that myself.
But you are so much better.
You are from the rarest bird-
A feather.
Dark eyes
That warm my heart.
Give me wings of crystal
So that I can fly.
Fly from here and then to there,
Good places that they take me only
Where joy goes by sweetly and slowly.
Yes, it's you who teaches me how,
And I think I do quite well.
But you are so much better-
You are a sturdy shelter
Amidst the senile hail.
