The article “Black Is Beauty”, by Shenell L. Birmingham of the United Kingdom talks about how the word “black”, is always associated with things that are very negative. Saying that things like black magic, blackmail, and black sheep were all things that were considered negative. She uses a phrase called a “backhanded compliment”, meaning a sort of passive aggressive compliment that has been used on her in the past. For example, she states that someone complimented her by saying “You’re actually pretty for a black girl”. Which are all fair points, because whether we would like to admit it or not, we have most likely used compliments like this in our day to day lives without even realizing it. Most of the time it has nothing to do with us discriminating against someone, but today with social media being a driving factor in paranoia among instances like this. Someone may not take something like a backhand compliment as a compliment, but as an insult. And this article shows how it is very important to be considerate to others. Thinking before you speak is a very good life skill that can help grow your social skills. So I agree with the main point of the article that we as a society need to build on this.
