In “A Crash Course in Coolness” Emily Doughan explains the intoxicated feeling of just receiving a new driver’s license. However, this extreme self-confidence leads to her first crash which is fortunately only a fender bender. This experience shows Emily how much responsibility is required to legally drive a vehicle. This article helps define how scary and real a car crash truly is. Only days after receiving her driver’s license, Emily is filled with “a bloated sense of confidence” that only leads to misfortune. Luckily, a simple fender bender is all that occurs. This first experience is one that I can understand, and though I haven’t yet crashed a car, I have run into a tree with a lawnmower! I am not surprised with Doughan’s reaction of fear, panic, and guilt. I am certain that all new drivers would react similarly if not worse than she did. In conclusion, I feel that Emily’s experience has made me give more respect toward driving and think of it more as a privilege than a right.
