Copper Sun, a historical fiction novel by Sharon Draper, is about a girl named Amari who is taken from her family at the age of 15 in slavery times. She faces great challenges with losing her village, parents, brother, and soon-to-be husband. She is also put through the long ship ride back to the colonies which killed many of the women and men that were brought with her. She was then taken to the colonies, branded, and sold off to a man named Mr. Derby with a well-known plantation in South Carolina. With little time, Amari is able to sneak away for a change of freedom, not knowing what lies ahead in her journey full of horror. 

I really enjoyed reading this book. It taught me to always do what's right, be kind, and never give up. Overall, this book was amazing. One of the things I loved about Copper Sun was that Draper always had something exciting or intriguing to read about in the next chapter, meaning that there were so many things happening in Amari and Polly’s lives that were just so interesting to read about. I would definitely recommend this book to 8th graders or above, because the slavery and violent acts in the book might be a little harsh, also with some of the wording might not be very young age appropriate.
