Insurgent written by New York Times bestselling author, Veronica Roth, has captivated many young readers. This science fiction novel, published by the company HarperCollins, was printed in the U.S and released in the year of 2012. Insurgent is the second book of the Divergent series. This novel is a fascinating, haunting, and promising piece that can teach readers the importance of commitment and hope.

The novel circles around 16 year old Beatrice (Tris) Prior, who happens to be the narrator of the book. The setting takes place in Chicago, some time in the future. Factions have been made to divide and keep the peace among the citizens, due to the past war that destroyed almost everything. In the previous book, Tris had just started to get used to her Divergence, and the faction she entered. Now, Tris must pick a side. She can either become a Dauntless traitor, but get the information her parents died for (that could end the war between the factions) or, have all the information and data destroyed forever by the Dauntless and factionless when they attack the Erudite and take down the leader (Jeanine Matthews). Tris must act quickly and decide wisely without hurting the ones she loves. Eventually, haunting grief and guilt will transform Tris and her decisions.

Readers can ride along as Tris discovers more about the factions, the people surrounding her, and her Divergence. James Dashner, New York Times bestselling author of The Maze Runner, says, “Divergent is a captivating, fascinating book that kept me in constant suspense and was never short on surprises. It will be a long time before I quit thinking about this haunting vision of the future”.

Insurgent has been compared to many similar pieces, such as the Hunger Games series, written by Suzanne Collins. The settings both take place in the future, both are science fiction pieces, and both of the main characters have very similar goals. However, the plot of the story is very different, and so are the characteristics of the surroundings and roles. Even though there has been some controversy over the novels, both females are very talented writers. Veronica Roth started writing the first part of the Divergent trilogy when she was still a student in college. Now, she's a full time writer, living near Chicago. Roth is the recipient of the Goodreads Favorite Book of 2011 and 2012 winner for Best Young Adult Fantasy and Science Fiction. Her other piece is Allegiant, which completes the three book series.

Insurgent is a thrilling sci-fi novel that all teens should read. It’s full of love, bravery, action and cliffhangers. The plot, setting, and characters of the book is what makes it a very entertaining piece. In my opinion, I would rate this book a 4.5 out of a 5 star rating. Once you pick it up, you won’t be able to set it down.
