Imagine being 9 years old in WWII, losing your brother, and having your own mother give you away. Well, the main character in “The Book Thief” named Liesel Meminger was that 9-year-old girl. She was only lefts with pictures of her brother and a Hand Diverge Handbook, which she found when they were burning her brother. She has been adopted by the Hubermann family who lived in Molching, Germany. Liesel struggles because she doesn't really know how to read or write. A random knock came to the door one day. It was a Jew. Will Liesel Meminger survive the war? Will she understand the troubles between Jews and Germans? And.. Will she be loved again? Find out in the Book Thief written by Marcus Zusak.
The main character in The Book Thief  is Liesel Meminger, Hans Hubermann, Rosa Hubermann, Max Vandenburg, and Rudy Steiner. Liesel Meminger is the overall main character in the story. She is a 9-year-old girl who just got given away by her own mother. On her way to her new family, she lost her only brother. They buried him tight by the tracks. Liesel Meminger has a very hard time reading or writing. She struggles but then gets better with the help of her new papa, Hans Hubermann. She gets more involved in her writing when she meets a Jew called Max, which her family was hiding. She was also called the “Book Thief”, by Rudy when he caught her stealing books from the mayor. Another main character is Rosa and Hans Hubermann. They are Liesel’s new parents. Rosa is known to make the “best” pea soup-which mostly makes people puke from it after they eat it on and on. Hans is a very calm man and he loves to play the accordion. Another great add to the story was Max Vandenburg. He is a Jew who came to the Huberman's for shelter. He is risking everyone's lives. He is also very amazed about Liesel. And lastly, not a very important character, but he is good to be mentioned about, is Rudy Steiner. He is Liesel’s next door neighbor. He really likes Liesel and he really cares about her. But there is sort of a twist at the end… Some major events in the story would be Liesel’s brother dying, Liesel’s first day at school, meeting Rudy, stealing her first book, visiting the major’s house, their library, meeting Max, Hans sent away, and, of course, the last part…
The author, Markus Zusak is an amazing author. He writes amazing books which will make you be on the edge of your seat. But Marcus uses a lot of Author’s Craft to make the story even better. In the “Book Thief,” there is a lot of symbolism used throughout the whole book. Each little or big one means a lot of the story. He also uses figurative language like similes, "'The sky is blue today, Max, and there is a big long cloud, and it's stretched out like a rope. At the end of it, the sun is like a yellow hole,'" (Zusak 249). Markus Zusak also writes this story from Death's point of view which makes the story feel like it's written in the third person pov. Having Death tell the story, it has Death tell the story in his perspective. The setting of the story is 33 Himmel Street in Molching, Germany. Lastly, the mood of the story is sad because this is happening in WWII and a lot of close ones are dying.
I LOVED THIS BOOK! It's the best book I ever read. I love this books to the moon and back, no I think this deserves more distance, from the Neptune and back. This book is filled with wonder. I could never put it down! It is so suspenseful. Each page, each word, each chapter AMAZING! And the ending the most suspenseful! SO Many actions!!! I'm not spoiling it!!! Markus Zusak is one of the best authors out there. His books are always suspenseful. If you like this book you will love “Message Man”. If I had to rate this book this would be my rate: 10/10.
