The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender is a book by Leslye Walton that follows four generations of the Roux family, the fourth following our “main” character Ava Lavender, a mystical girl given that she was born with full-sized wings. Yes, wings. Those things with feathers that help birds fly and humans who dream of soaring might want. Strangely (because having wings isn’t strange enough), she can’t fly. Now, I say “main” because Ava does not appear in the book as much as you’d think but rather her family as a whole holds a huge presence throughout the novel. There is no best way to summarize this book other than it’s the life story of the Roux family and their journey through “foolish love”.
   

The writing itself is well executed in providing a peculiar atmosphere and leaves me at times wondering, wait, is this really happening or is it just a metaphor? The characters are not as memorable as other stories I have read but that did not impede with the engaging storytelling.
