The movie Tangled (2010) is an all around amazing movie. Based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, Rapunzel, Tangled is not only a wonderful adaptation and well written, but it is also a story with many life lessons folded in.

The story revolves around a young princess, who was stolen and a baby for her beautiful hair that is known to generate agelessness as long as it is not cut. Mother Gothel, who kidnapped Rapunzel, has kept her locked in a tower for her whole life. On Rapunzel’s birthday, all she wants from her “Mother” is to explore the world and see the “lights.”

The plotline is amazing because of the attention to detail in Tangled. The crown meant for Rapunzel makes its way back to her through a wanted thief, Flynn Rider. After escaping guards, Flynn encounters Gothel’s hidden tower and climbs it. When he enters through a window, he is knocked out. When he wakes he finds his satchel with the crown is gone. Rapunzel, not knowing what the crown is, tries it on in various ways, but she never realizes it is meant for her.

Tangled provides key themes, one being the superficiality of mankind. Flynn Rider is shown as a thief with a huge ego, but throughout the movie, his character changes and eventually we see that he is Eugene Fitzherbert, a kind hearted man who truly cares about Rapunzel. The movie displays his character change through the name he is called. At the beginning, he is being yelled at, referred to as “Rider” depicting him as a bad guy, a thief that only cares about himself. However, at the end of the movie, Rapunzel calls him “Eugene” after he opened himself up to her and showed who he truly is.

This theme is also shown through Mother Gothel. At the beginning of the movie, she is seen caring for Rapunzel and brushing her hair, while explaining true dangers for a little girl in the world to Rapunzel, but as Rapunzel grows up, Mother Gothel begins to exarate the small issues in the world to prevent her from developing ideas of her own. Later, Gothel shows her true colors, shown through a change in the way that she looks.

Throughout the movie, viewers may feel angry, scared, sad, and even joyful at parts. Tangled is a perfect movie for anyone looking for an Action/Adventure movie, or even a romance. It is free with a disney+ subscription. It may seem like a kids movie, but the older the viewer, the more in depth they will understand it and be able to pull themes from the plot.
