Between Somewhere Album Review
Token is an up and coming artist that has begun to gain some recognition in the hip hop community. His newest project, Between Somewhere, was released December 7, 2018 and has gained a lot of recognition. The album consist of 17 tracks, some with featured artist such as IDK, Bas, and Tech N9ne. What makes taken different and unique to some of the new rap in hip hop is his actual flow and style of music. Token’s music is lyrical and are more like narratives, compared to some newer songs that consist of a catchy hook and beat to earn it’s popularity.
This album is a lot of Token’s reflection on what's going on in his life, either it being personal issue occuring or what he seems notice happening in the world around him with his growing popularity. This can be seen in the very first track of the album, “Somewhere in Between”. This track is a has a slow and empathetic tone. On this track he describes that his popularity isn't something that is big but rather he’s in between being famous and being a normally known person, thus the play on of words for the title of the track. In the song he raps, “Shit I aint famous, guess I’m somewhere in between/If I was famous I wouldn't have to promote my song on this livestream/‘Cause my manager told me to, he said my plays aren’t the best.”In this song he also self reflect what a little bit of fame has done to him and how he truly feels about his actions. He says,
I wrote a song about a kid who got bullied, it’s called “Exception”/ And the part I didn’t mention was Andy was a real person/ And someone I befriended/ Then left him for another group of friends who used to torment him/ I made money of off “Exception” and off of Andy/ In interviews they treated me like a hero
In the third track of the album,”Rich for You”, he goes on to rap about his mother and says:
She’s so proud, and I can see the pride in her/ And that makes me so happy that I could cry with her/ Now she becomes the focus and she deserves it too/ So if I’m a success, I’m a success, for you/ But don’t feel bad, it’s okay/ I do it all for you, my friend/ Don’t you feel good when it go away/ When it’s on me instead
On this track, Token discusses his motives to gaining his popularity and becoming a successful artist in order to makes his mother proud. Not only does he want to take care of his mother but those who he truly cares about.
On the track title “Same Difference” in his album, he breaks down how fame and success nowadays, or at least how he seems to view it. He talks about his experience with other artist he looked up to and just how fame has made them “fake”. In the song he says:
Every time you try to sum me, you show me/ Just how insecure an artist with success and money can be/ With that envy in your words/ I'm telling fans that I'm a fan of you/ 'Cause I know they wanna hear it/ But I know who you are in real life/ So I hear the bullshit in your lyrics
He breaks down fame as giving fans what they want to hear and see, even if it might not be who that person really is, he has seen this and even done this himself. Though being new to the hip hip scene, Token has gained a lot of recognition for being a humble as young artist, compared to the newer generation of rapper, Mumble rappers. People have even compared him to Eminem, though he does not considers that as a compliment because he want to create his own story and fame, not to be compared to an artist that has already done that himself.
Overall the album is a very good representation of Token’s talent as a growing artist. His album has great lyricism with beats that keeps your head nodding. He is understandable and can be related to through his lyrics. I give this album 9 out of 10 due to the fact of the difference in the kind of music he produced for this project, it is different from what his peers in the hip hop scene are doing.
