Red Solo Cup by Toby Keith
Some Americans have the reputation of being illiterate idiots, but no matter how hard some Americans try, there will always be those people who will continue to reinforce this reputation for the entire country. Toby Keith’s song “Red Solo Cup” is an encouragement to everyone that talking like an elementary student and “saving the planet” is the perfect way to spend ones time. Sang from the perspective of Mr. Keith himself, he uses simple phrases, a limited vocabulary, and vulgar language to represent how childishly backwards America truly is. As the song progresses, the repetitiveness of the lyrics and cords played creates a boring feel which no ones ears like to hear. With keeping Red Solo Cup in the history of America’s music, people may, can, and will come to the assumption that all Americans are truly ignorant.
With the economic downturn, America has been working toward becoming more environmentally efficient: from doing everything online, saving paper, to making cars with less harmful emissions. Toby Keith “thinks” he is expressing how to make our world better, when in reality; he is just making the environment worse. “And in 14 years they are decomposable”. Yes, Red Solo Cups are decomposable, once they go through a landfill, are ripped and tore into itsy bitsy pieces, so they then can be reformed into something new. Keith is the kind of person who is the one killing our planet, and couldn’t seem to care less about other Americans who try hard to keep our world astonishing just the way that the earth was when God first created it. These despicable lyrics tell those ignorant American’s who are too stupid to know information for themselves, that when you throw a Red Solo Cup away, they will decompose. When in reality, they just sit and rot in landfills, polluting our planet.
Songs are supposed to be works of breathtaking poetry set to complementary music. When analyzing Toby Keith’s “Red Solo Cup” one must understand that Toby Keith is not the author of this dreadful song. This, my friends, makes it even worse. Keith didn’t write this song, but yet he found it so “fantastic” that he was willing to sing it. The lyrics are some of the worst lyrics ever written. “Now I really love how you are easy to stack… Well that my friends is quite yucky”. This is not the work of a fine poet! The word choice throughout the song is that of a second grader. Not only does the song use very adolescent language it also uses vulgar phrases. “Freddie-Mac can kiss my a**”. The use of curse words is another sign of this songs ignorance. The type of language used throughout the song shows the empty-headedness of the writer and of those who like the song.
Not only is the language of this song unsophisticated, but it also uses crudely crafted music. Musically, the song uses a repetitive cord progression. “Lets have a party,/ lets have a party/ proceed to party, proceed to party.” The systematic feeling of the song achieves its purpose of being memorable because the poor listener can no longer push those lyrics out of their head because they are overused in the song.
I cannot stand that this song is considered part of the genre of country music. I enjoy country music because it often includes lyrics, which create a story playing through your head. The fact that “Red Solo Cup” by Toby Keith exists in the realm of country music is a disgrace to the genre itself. The use of ignorant language, vulgar curse words, and systematic repetition of the cord progression, is a blemish that must be eliminated completely, popped like a pimple. This awful song never deserved to exist in the music world, and America would be better to annihilate it completely from country music’s history altogether.
