20/20 Experience by Justin Timberlake
Justin Timberlake is back after a seven-year hiatus with album The 20/20 Experience.
With help from producer Timbaland; this record has soul and a cinematic vibe. Compared to his previous albums, the musicality in this one is stellar.
“Suit & Tie,” which features Jay-Z, and “Mirrors” were the lead singles from the record; both did well in several countries worldwide. The 20/20 Experience itself debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 upon release, which is no surprise.
The album’s opener, “Pusher Love Girl,” is slow and smooth, setting the stage for the rest of the tracks. “Don’t Hold the Wall,” and “Tunnel Vision” both have small details that function in making you want to sing along. My personal favorite, “Strawberry Bubblegum,” has an effortless aspect and silky texture. “Spaceship Coupe” is an emotional joyride about love. “That Girl” has a 60s style that everyone adores. Michael Jackson inspires dance track “Let the Groove Get In”; the gaudy brass instruments make it a hit. “Mirrors” reflects on old Timberlake, for its beats imitate former JT hits like “Sexy Back” or “My Love.” Closer “Blue Ocean Floor” is a beautiful, simple melody. Each track has its own flawless, unique feel.
JT’s golden falsetto is enough to make you melt. Paired with horns and perfectly manufactured beats, this album tells a story. Some may say the songs are too long or too slow (20/20’s ten tracks sprawl out over a long 70 minutes), but appreciating the jazzy vibe is important. Timberlake has matured musically and it works almost perfectly.
The 20/20 Experience is the most creative, innovative, and well-crafted R&B album I’ve ever heard; hats off to Timberlake and Timbaland for staying in the game after so much time.
