Dream Theater
What can be said about Dream Theater that hasn't already been said? Well very few but I will do my best. Dream Theater is a Progressive Metal band spanning in the mid 80's that gained popularity in 1992 due to Images and Words. Since then Dream Theater has become a staple to any Prog-head's collection. This band includes long epics, shedding solos, and pure enjoyment for most, if not, all of their albums. They have released 12 albums and an EP in their over 25 years of sucess with very few band line up changes(they've only had three).
If you want to get into progressive metal I do suggest starting with these guys because they can really blow you away at first listen. Some of my favorite albums are Metropolis Part 2, Octavarium and Train of Thought. If you like progressive rock or metal and haven't heard of these guys, get on them right now.
