No, You Cannot | Teen Ink

No, You Cannot MAG

November 6, 2008
By Anonymous

It is a new nation,
a nation that proudly proclaims:
“Yes we can.”
But what power holds “yes we can,”
when America has told many of our
brothers and sisters
“no, you cannot”?
You cannot follow your heart.
You cannot move forward.
You cannot take a hand.
You cannot break the mold.
“Marriage is a holy bond
for a man and a woman
it is not yours to taint,” they say.
Where is the future?
Relentlessly we must
keep striving for a better day.
We must stop this hatred
and bring about change in the
wake of defeat.

This is good. I like the emotion of contradition if you know what I mean. I like the positive message too.

Umm, I'm not too scared, I just think that would be really really weird. I'm Christian and I beleive it is wrong. I think gay people can do what ever they want together, they just can't change the definition of marriage. Also, I've never really had the urge to marry someone from the same gender, and its not just what society tells me. Society tells me that deporting ILLEGAL immirants is wrong, but I don't listen to them. i have my own beliefs, and no matter how wacked out society gets, hopefully my family will stay conservative. Even though I'm in California, I am from Texas and most people there are conservative christians. hence the name Bible Belt

MT14, who defines 'marriage' as you perceive it to be between a man and a woman? Some group of males who wrote a book hundreds of years ago? You may claim that it comes from God, but humanity has always distorted 'God' and His messages for their own purposes. Need I mention the Crusades? The destruction of the Huguenots? The 30 Years War? you CAN marry someone of the same gender, you have just been taught not to, or are too scared to do so.

Ellemarie, I suggest that you look at the world with your own eyes, and make your own decisions. Society has taught you to think of marriage as a one-on-one heterosexual union, but it is only the commonly accepted definition.

1. No, I don't think God changes. He has his rules and we should live by them.

2. Every other country has borders, why can't America. If "illegals" want to become legal, they need to come in the right way, not show disregard for our laws by breaking one the moment they come in.

3. Tell me how we discriminate against hispanics. And, since we are fighting a war aginst people who are mostly muslim, isn't it reasonable to suspect them over a chinese person or something? I don't agree with racial profiling, but i understand we are in a war, and if we do everything we can so we don't offend anyone, bad things will happen. The Fort Hood shooter stayed in the Army because his superiors didn't want to offend muslims. Now people are dead.

Be nice to trees- they'll become books someday.

As the world changes I believe that God changes with it. In the beginning of the New Testament God was a vengeful God but he change to the loving father we now associate with him. Jesus accepted everyone and never called anyone a sinner. Who are we to judge? Our culture not only discriminates against homosexuals. Right now we are acting like hypocrites by promising freedom to all but then calling people 'illegals' and discriminating against all hispanics or putting muslims on a no fly list. By discriminating a certain people we actually weaken our country. Our country has such beautiful morals in theory. We just have to put them into practice.

But God created marriage, so man should not be allowed to change it. And why should we change our mindset?

@always-sunshine:

God didn't put the thought of being gay in people's head. That was the devil. Why would God say that marrige is a holy bond between a man and a woman and then put the thought of being gay in someone's mind? It doesn't make any sense. Ever since Lucifer left heaven he's been screwing with our minds. Even now, he's putting that thought in people's mind. So, I'm not sorry, I believe you're wrong.

I must agree with misplaced texan. Just becase God forgives us of our sins doesn't mean you should deliberately do something wrong and say, "whoops, sorry God, I'll try harder tomorrow!" and then go do it again. so, no, it's not kinda ok!!!

This poem is very well written, I'll give you that, but the people have voted. Men cannot marry men and women cannot marry women. I am Christian as well and I wish you all would realize how wrong the very concept is. God created man and woman, so it should stay.

I in no way have a problem with gay people, only with their beleifs.

Practice doesnt make perfect. Perfect practice make perfect.

Although i am not gay, it pains me to hear more news that gay marraige will not be approved because i have several gay, lesbian, and bisexual friends. They are fantastic, amazing people. It makes me so mad when i hear that gays are an embarrasement, because i think of my friends that they're bashing. They deserve every right as a straight person. Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece with everyone.
