My Religion MAG

By Anonymous

I have a magnet on my mirror stating, “Life is not about finding yourself – life is about creating yourself.” This is the statement I live by.

Many people do not believe me when I say I am an atheist. They don’t understand that I simply do not believe in any sort of god or afterlife. I also do not believe in the devil, in angels, or in souls. I believe in myself and the strength I have gained through the help of my parents, teachers, and friends – and my own hard work.

I am not going to try to dissuade anyone from his or her own opinions either. I know that people enjoy having religion in their lives; some need their faith to help them through hard times. And some do not want the responsibility of their misfortunes weighing down on their shoulders.

I do. I abhor the idea of fate – that everything is already planned out and you have no control to change anything. If you believe in fate, when bad things happen, it is not your fault; it’s just fate. When my life is not going well, I know that it is no one’s fault but my own. When I do well in school, when I fall in love, it is not fate and we are not soul mates. I worked hard and paid attention and did the homework. My love and I simply love each other – that is all it is, and for me that is all it needs to be.

For some, life is overwhelming. How can anyone be successful and happy in such a difficult, horrible world? They need someone to help them, someone to guide them, and someone to have faith in to make sure things get better. Placing my success and happiness in another’s hands breaks my heart. I need to be successful because of my efforts. I must be responsible for my own happiness. That is what I need from my religion.

Who will ever know what the truth really is? All I know is in the same way that some have full faith and trust in God to give them hope, I need to believe I am on my own to be truly happy – for how can I create myself if I spend my entire life just looking?

I love that you respect other people's beliefs. That's so rare these days. I have met other atheists that just try to dissaude me or put me down because I believe in God. I think its awesome how confident you are in yourself and how much respect you have for everyone (:

You know, your a really good writer. Good job on this article, I liked the way you put it.

However, you're wrong. The universe didn't just "appear." It didn't spontaneously explode from atoms. After all, the atoms themselves would have had to come from something.

But God is the answer! By God, I mean Christ Jesus and the God from the Bible. It's the only logical answer, and everything has a logical answer. There isn't just no answer. Nothing works like that, as we all know.

Please don't take this comment the wrong way. I hope that you will think about it for a while. More than five minutes. If you will, think about it a little throughout your day, or even week, or forever until you come up with your answer.

Good luck!

Living is easy with eyes closed :)

Great article! I am an agnostic myself. I feel like there is a greater force in the world, whether it be God or something else, but I do not truly believe in the ideas in the Bible. I think that I do better living in a world where everything I do is not explained by religion.

I don't believe in hell but I believe in my parent's couch-- Watsky

Like I said, this is an opinion piece, and I was simpley saying that my opinion on this subject was different from the authors. And obviously different than yours. No gimmicks, no trick, those were my intensions true and honest. I did not intend to pick on the author and I apologize if I came off that way. However, I will mot change my opinion in the sence that I felt like this article's angle looked down on those who are religious.

I think we both agree that other religious articles have a MUCH more condescending angle and are openly rude and purposfully offensive- but I never, as tyou put it, try to "fry" even those who write that kind of article. Again, religion is a personal thing and I beleive everyone has a right to there own opinion on it. If people shoudl choose to be rude, then I shall point out that I think they are being rude, voice my opinion, and explain. I will not "fry" them, because I beleive then I would be doing an equally wrong thing.

I agree with your second paragraph and the whole essence of love not being perfect. Thanks for the clarification.

sorry agnotTheodd ... wrong word. didnt mean to be insulting. what im trying to get at is that no one has the capability to love perfectly. im sure your parents love you more than anything else on this planet, more than themselves. and thats saying something. and i know what its like to love pets ... the worst night of my life was the night my dog got hit by a car and died.

and love for people is insanely complicated sometimes. if someone told all the people they knew just how much they loved them i have a feeling they would be received as weird/strange/creepy.

so no, i guess that love is not superficial. it's just not perfect.

Then why, are you commenting on how this is really insulting to people when there are plenty of other fish out there to fry? If you admit this person had a much better and civil control of their tone, why pick on them as opposed to higher profile subjects? And this article, relatively, is incredibly civil...Almost U.N. civil

Yes, it's true that this article doesn't have nearly a condescending an air as most religious aricles do, but I don't think this is anywhere near neutral. And of coarse, it doesn't have to be. Religion and spiritualism is a personol concept. This is an 'opinion' piece as well, thereby giving any writer the full right to any angle they choose.

I just can't say I cared for this angle, because I do feel that this paticular angle looks down on people who do not share the author's view, even if not as much as other articles.

Wow, great article! I'm a little confused on where I stand with religion. Sometimes I believe in God, sometimes I don't, you know? Your article has sure triggered a lot of good arguments, and it has given me a pretty good inspiration to write :) Thanks for sharing your religion!

To say being christian gives you higher standards and morals is a prime example of religious elitism. Being christian makes you no more moral than the next person.

For instance, what about all those Christian wackos who decide to go kill a couple people cuz y'know, God just told them to.

On the contrary, I don't find this condescending. Especially in comparison to other articles on religious or antireligious subjects. I think they did as good a job as possible in maintaining neutrality.

Umm...There we go again with that elitism that pops up with most religious people. You clearly have higher standards because you have accepted the lord into your heart whereas folks like me, who choose not to believe, are clearly sinners with low values and standards.

How about those Christian wackos who go onto kill men, women, and children under "orders from God"? Sounds moral to me. What's your contention?

helloworldyourock, are you suggesting that the love my parents have for me is superficial? The love between me and my dogs is superficial? The love between me and my best friend (who also appreciates the title of girlfriend) is superficial? That is just about the most insulting thing I have ever heard. Religious elitism needs to take a hike.

And you, snickerlover, you apparently respect the point of view then go on to prattle on about how every atheist you have met is miserable. "I respect you, but ill make a generic assumption about you anyway even though I haven't met you."

and the earth is unique. it is the only place where pain exists and the only place where we have the chance to fight for what we believe is true. whether you believe in heaven or hell or nothingness or something else, once you leave this earth you are done fighting. all thats left to do is see where that fight takes you.

i agree with bennyB and snickerlover ...

there is nothing like knowing you are loved in spite of sin we cannot comprehend. loved more than we can comprehend. can anyone on the planet honestly say that they do not mind only being loved superficially?

Well... first, that comment was reply was very very rude.

And secondly, I was raised in a very holy household. My grandfather is a preacher, my grandmother writes about God... And let me tell you one thing.. He is there. Just because we can't see Him does not mean there is no God.

I do respect your point of view though.

Last year, I lived with an atheist, and her family members were godless believers too. I have to say she was very miserable. Along with all the other atheist I've met.
